While both Alipay and WeChat Pay are widely used, Alipay is currently the most straightforward option for foreign travelers. Here is why.
1. Why Alipay is Simpler to Set Up
- English Interface: Alipay has a dedicated international mode designed in English.
- Built-In Transit & Didi: You can hail Didi rides and open subway QR codes directly within the Alipay app in English.
- Foreign Card Verification: Linking international Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or Diners cards is generally more reliable during identity verification.
2. What to Know About WeChat Pay with Foreign Cards
You can also bind a foreign card to WeChat Pay, but keep these practical points in mind:
- Merchant Payments Only: You can pay registered business QR codes (restaurants, convenience stores, taxis).
- No Peer-to-Peer Transfers: You cannot transfer money directly to individual personal accounts or send red packets (Hongbao) without a mainland Chinese bank account.
- Recommendation: Use WeChat primarily for messaging (talking to local hotels, drivers, or contacts), and keep Alipay as your primary payment method.
3. The 3% Fee Rule & Card Verification
- 0% Fee Under 200 RMB: Any single transaction of 200 RMB (approx. $28 USD) or less has zero platform fee. Only single transactions exceeding 200 RMB incur a 3% platform fee.
- Bank Security Flags: Before you fly, let your home bank know you are traveling to China so small overseas verification charges are not flagged as fraud.
