Does a flower shop need a flower preservation cabinet? Or would an air conditioner suffice?
[Hua11.com Original] A freezer (flower preservation freezer) is one of the few fixed asset investments when opening a flower shop. Depending on the volume and preservation technology, the price ranges from three or four thousand to ten or twenty thousand yuan.
So, is this investment worthwhile? Let's make a rough calculation.
First, what is the function of the freezer? Its main function is to prolong the lifespan of fresh cut flowers.
If placed outside the freezer, depending on the season and storage environment, flowers can last an average of 3 to 5 days. In winter, the temperature is relatively low, so the flowering period is longer, and flowers don't wither as quickly. However, in summer, the high and muggy temperatures cause flowers to wither quickly, shortening their lifespan. Without a freezer, unsold flowers can result in significant losses, which is not conducive to business operations.
When placed in the freezer, the storage environment remains constant throughout the year, providing a relatively stable flowering period. Let's assume it averages 10 days. Conservatively speaking, the freezer can double the lifespan of fresh cut flowers and reduce losses.
Now, let's assume the cost of flowers at one time is 1000 yuan. To maintain a continuous supply without a freezer, you need to replenish stock every 5 days, which means 6 times a month, resulting in a purchase cost of 6000 yuan. However, with a freezer, the flowering period doubles, so you only need to replenish stock 3 times a month, resulting in a purchase cost of 3000 yuan.
In one month, you can save 3000 yuan on purchases. Of course, this calculation does not consider flower sales, electricity expenses, or other costs. It only provides a basic idea.
Based on the price of the three-door freezer we use (about 6000 yuan), the freezer can pay for itself in two months (6000/3000 = 2).
Then what about using an air conditioner?
If the flowers are placed under the air conditioner, the temperature becomes unstable due to the coming and going of guests, which is not good for maintaining the flowers. Moreover, the air conditioner blows air, and the wind can also affect the flowers' preservation.
Additionally, if people stay under the air conditioner for a long time, especially at a lower temperature, it is not good for their health. But flowers need a relatively low temperature. This creates a contradiction: you either sacrifice the flowers or your health. Neither choice is ideal.
Another important point is that to maintain a constant low temperature, the air conditioner has to work 24 hours a day, leading to high power consumption. Commercial electricity is usually much more expensive than residential electricity, which is a factor to consider.
Due to these reasons, it is better to buy a freezer, which will save a lot of trouble and money in the long run.
There are two types of freezers on the market: air-cooled and direct-cooled. So which type should our flower shops and floral studios buy?
We should buy air-cooled ones. The fan in the air-cooled freezer ensures the indoor temperature is relatively even, without large fluctuations, and the cooling effect is better. The constant temperature is very conducive to the preservation of fresh cut flowers.
Direct-cooled freezers do not have these advantages.
So, buying an entry-level three-door true air-cooled freezer (beware of fake air-cooled ones on the market) can hold quite a lot of flowers, which is sufficient for an average flower shop. (Hua11.com students can consider participating in our freezer group purchase. The chain stores we operate use these, and the quality is relatively stable, avoiding many unnecessary troubles.)
Hope this is helpful to you.
